Refractory materials for iron making
The iron making process (primarily carried out in blast furnaces and their ancillary facilities) faces harsh conditions such as high temperatures (above 1500°C), corrosion from molten iron/slag, corrosion from alkali metal vapors, and mechanical wear. Furthermore, operating conditions vary significantly across different parts of the process. The refractory system used in iron making differs significantly from that used in steel making. Blast furnace refractories (by region)
Furnace Throat & Top Shaft
High alumina bricks ((Al₂O₃ >65%), corundum bricks ((Al₂O₃ >90%), mullite bricks and steel fiber reinforced refractory castables/spray coatings.
(Middle/Lower Shaft)
High alumina bricks ((Al₂O₃ >75%), mullite bricks/corundum mullite bricks, sillimanite bricks/andalusite bricks and special refractory castables/spray coatings.
(Belly & Bosh)
Corundum bricks/brown corundum bricks and high performance refractory castables/spray coatings.

Regenerator Checker Bricks:
Low-creep high-alumina bricks (Al₂O₃ 55-75%), low-creep mullite bricks, andalusite bricks, and sillimanite bricks.
Combustion Chamber/Vault:
Silica bricks, low-creep high-alumina bricks, mullite bricks, refractory spray coatings, and castables.
Pipes/Hot Air Valve Surroundings:
High-alumina/mullite castables.
Air Supply Branches:
High-alumina castables/high-alumina & hollow ball castables.
Cast House & Runner/ Trough
Working layer: main ditch castable, branch ditch castable, slag ditch castable, gunning material and supporting skimmer, swing chute, etc.

Taphole Clay
